Debbie is known for her beautiful shibori-inspired fabric collections that feel at once both timeless and modern. Something new we’re doing for this round of Blockheads is a weekly video. You can follow along with me as I sew the block of the week and share my tips and tricks and talk about different construction techniques. In this week’s video, I’ll break down the no-waste flying geese construction and show how I use seam tape on my sewing machine plate to avoid having to mark stitching and cutting lines on my fabric when making flying geese and HSTs.

I’ll also show you exactly how to trim down our slightly oversized flying geese and quarter-square triangles using a basic ruler.

This 4 1/2” ruler from UltraGrid is my go-to everyday ruler!

Once again, my Easy Press Pen and Fabric Treatment helped me get flat seams where I had a lot of bulk.

 

For those of you who prefer to make your flying geese using the stitch-and-flip method, here are the fabric cutting instructions.

For 6” finished blocks:

B: (4) 2” x 3 1/2” rectangles
C: (8) 2” squares

For 12” finished blocks:

B: (4) 3 1/2” x 6 1/2” rectangles
C: (8) 3 1/2” squares

And I am making a traditional/repro scrappy fall version and a sweet/cottage-y Americana version in 6” blocks. I couldn't decide whether to use red or blue fabrics for my Americana block, so I ended up making one of each!
